Research that has been and is currently ongoing at the Metallurgical Engineering Group includes bioflotation, up-grading of low rank coal, utilization of industrial minerals, especially zeolites, advanced oxide systems engineering, hydrometallurgy and bio-hydrometallurgy of nickel, copper, gold and tin ores, extraction of iron from leterite ore and iron sand, extraction of rare earth metals, engineering high strength steels, amimicrobial metal alloys and medical uses as well as metal alloys for high temperature applications (superalloys), corrosion and coatings. In an effort to disseminate research results, apart from utilizing scientific publication media such as available international and national journals and seminars, since 2008 the Metallurgical Engineering Expertise Group has routinely held the National Iron and Steel Seminar (SNBB) and the Indonesian Process Metallurgy Seminar (SNBB) every year. Currently efforts are being made to collaborate with several State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) industries to utilize research results on a laboratory scale into product models that can be prepared to be upgraded into commercial products (prototypes), especially for products that can function as import substitutes.
Industrial-scale research collaboration for the implementation of innovation results has been carried out by preparing cooperation proposals for the initiation of special steel production for modern equipment in national strategic industries. Industrial scale research collaboration has been established with PT. Krakatau Steel (Tbk) and PT. Pindad (Persero).
